It was reported that 5,401 people have submitted requests to the Immigration and Emigration Department to obtain dual citizenship last year.

The department said that 1,621 applicants from Australia have submitted requests for dual citizenship, 885 from the United Kingdom, 795 from the US, 371 from Canada and several others from Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, France and Denmark.

Accordingly, the department has taken steps to grant them dual citizenship.
